Tryout Requirements

1. REGISTER FOR TRYOUT

  • All interested athletes must be registered in advance to attend

  • Complete the registration based desired player role

2. COMPLETE WEVA/USAV MEMBERSHIP

  • This is a REQUIRED, annual membership for ALL players and staff

  • Membership details and purchase links are available on our WEVA Page

 

*WEVA/USAV membership fees are separate from any Nickel City fees

3. PAY TRYOUT FEE

  • All participants must pay a tryout fee to Nickel City Volleyball

  • Payments can be made through Venmo or PayPal

4. ATTEND THE TRYOUT!

  • Failure to complete requirements #1-3 will delay or prohibit players from participating in tryouts

  • Nickel City has a closed tryout policy: only participating players and coaching staff will be allowed in the gym during tryout sessions

Teams and Roles

 

Travel Teams

We plan for three travel teams each season, in the 15u, 16u and 17u divisions. Teams will have 10-12 rostered travel players and 2-4 practice players each.

​

  • 14u or younger players are welcome to tryout for the 15u team, the roster will be determined by position and skill

  • 18u players are also welcome to tryout. Depending on turnout, we may be able to offer tournament opportunities ​

Practice Teams
Nickel City will have up to two practice teams, each with a max of 16 players. Players assigned to practice teams will be grouped by skill to allow for continued skill development during the season.

Updates for the upcoming tryout season are generally posted by late October - early November.

Tryout Dates

​

To ensure a smooth tryout and no delays in participation, review the tryout requirements to ensure all requirements are complete, including:

  • Have proof of WEVA membership (screenshot or printout of ID card)

  • Tryout fee paid (you may also bring exact cash)

  • Attend the tryout date/time that correlates to the athlete's age of eligibility - based on how old the athlete will be on June 30 of the upcoming year

  • Registered players should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to tryout start time for check-in.

When are tryouts?

  • Nickel City tryouts are typically held in mid-November or early-December, following the conclusion of the varsity high school post-season.

What is WEVA and why do I have to join?

  • The Western Empire Volleyball Association (WEVA) is a not-for-profit organization and a regional member of USA Volleyball (USAV), the national sports governing body for volleyball. Its purpose is to develop and promote the sport of volleyball, through adult, junior, and youth programs.

  • To participate in USAV programs (as a player, coach, manager, club or team rep, chaperone or administrator for any club or team) you must register as a member of USAV & WEVA. This registration provides you with coverage under the USAV Insurance Program during your participation in sanctioned tryouts, practices, clinics, and tournaments.

What age division am I eligible for?

  • USAV age definitions are determined by the age the player will be on June 30th during the active season.

  • For USAV, the season eligibility runs from Sept 1st - Aug 31st. For the 2025 - 2026 season, a player's age division is based on how old they will be on June 30, 2026.

  • Age divisions are enforced in sanctioned competitions and tournaments. Teams and players can enter into older age divisions but cannot compete in younger divisions. [ex. a 16u player/team can play in the 18u division, but an 18u player/team cannot participate in the 15u division].

I've never played volleyball, can I join?

  • Yes! Players of all skill level are invited to tryout and join. Players with limited experience would be best suited for a practice player role on one of the practice teams.​

​

I tried out for another club this season, is my membership still valid?

  • If you have a WEVA membership for the current season you can tryout with multiple clubs.

  • NOTE: Regular/full season memberships expire on August 31st. If you have renewed your membership as of September 1st of the current year, or purchased a tryout membership, it is valid for any club tryout.

  • Be prepared to provide proof of membership at your tryout.

I only want to be a practice player, do I still need to attend a tryout?

  • Yes! Attending tryouts will help us place you on a team that will best allow you to continue development of your skills.
